J.G Melon

What to expect

Upper East Side saloon since 1972: green-and-white check, melon decor, jukebox, cash-only swagger, and a burger so normal it becomes profound. Politicians, writers, families, and people who will start a petition if you touch the cottage fries.

They briefly threatened to kill the cottage fries in 2021. Chaos. Petition. Fries returned. Respect your elders.

Burger

Thick, juicy, cooked-through more often than not — ask for medium rare, receive Melon destiny. Lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, American cheese, optional bacon. No smash, no foie, no TED Talk. Just a cookout burger executed in a tavern that refuses to modernize.

Burger Review team recommendation: bacon cheeseburger + cottage fries + chili if you still have room for beef-on-beef diplomacy.

Bun

Soft, non-intrusive, classic. It knows its place and stays there.

Cheese

American cheese, melted properly. Bacon optional and recommended.

Pickles

Dill pickle with the usual garden crew. Acid for a patty that does not need gimmicks.

Sauces

No house emulsion manifesto. Condiment the American way and focus on the meat. Cottage fries are not optional for first-timers — wrinkled, chip-adjacent, endlessly copied, rarely equaled.
